Australia Opens its Border for The Australia – NZ Travel Bubble

Australia will be opening its border for The Australia-NZ travel bubble.  This is the first time Australia has opened its border to foreigners since the Covid-19 pandemic started in March 2020.

What is the Australia-NZ Travel Bubble?

The Australian Government is establishing a safe travel zone with New Zealand by allowing passengers from New Zealand to enter Australia, without the need to apply for travel exemptions.  The purpose for travel may be any of these: reunite with families and friends, holiday, business or work.

Passengers arriving from New Zealand will not be required to undergo quarantine on arrival in Australia but will be subject to New Zealand’s isolation/quarantine requirements upon return to New Zealand.

Who is eligible?

Passengers from New Zealand will be able to travel to Australia, quarantine-free, provided they have not been in an area designated as a COVID-19 hotspot in New Zealand, in the preceding 14 days.

The Australian Government is defining a hotspot using a three-day rolling average of three locally acquired cases per day.

When does it commence?

The Australia-NZ travel bubble commences on Friday, 16 October 2020.

Does the travel bubble apply to all states and territories in Australia?

At the time of writing this article, passengers from New Zealand are allowed to enter New South Wales, Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.
